Hi every one , well we are two days into our trip, towing an off road van 2.3t when we hit a big problem.

0n departing Terramungamine reserve this morning (good free camp) we hit a small rut in the road we were only moving very slowly on a tight right bend as soon as we went down into the rut and back out again the steering felt all wrong, the steering wheel went out of centre position,we knew something wasn't right so limped into Dubbo.

Called RACQ there prognosis is the steering rack appears to have separated from the rubber mounts on the right hand side.

Has anyone out there had a similar problem ? and should we be taking it to a Toyota Dealer or a Suspension Dealer?

Seems extremely strange for a LITTLE bump to do that. Most 100 have been belted over all sorts of rough terrain without mishap.

Perhaps something was loose.

Did u check it over before you left.

Either place would be good but Toyota would be dearest I bet.

If its just mounts a new one and tightening up may fix it as it takes a lot to put a wheel out of alignment.

Had a Toyota car that the mounts loosened New ones fixed it.

vehicle was serviced and thoroughly checked prior to leaving maybe just bad luck? there is a Pedders in town might enquire there first.

Go to Dubbo City Toyota first and ask for Greg Wallace.
He is the Sevice Manager
Tell him about your problem and tell him I sent you there.

I wish to thank everyone who contributed there advise all was valuable, the parts breakdown was helpful in sourcing the problem Special thanks to Mark for putting me on to Greg Wallace arrived at 8.15am Mon at Toyota Dubbo and Greg got the mechanic on to it straight away by 10.30 am problem solved and on my way again.
Apparently, the previous owner must have had the steering rack removed at some stage, the left hand side of the steering rack is secured by two bolts the right hand side is secured by two nuts and bolts there are two large washers that WERE PUT ON THE HEADS OF THE BOLTS UNDERNEATH INSTEAD OF ON TOP UNDER THE NUTS, because the washers were underneath this allowed the cylinder to be pushed up off the rubbers and past the nut on top. so glad to be a member of E xplore OZ as members assistance is invaluable when stuck in an unfamiliar place.
Many Many Thanks to all!

Cheers Joe.

Hi Joe

I just had a quick look at the online repair manual for the IFS model.

I would say you have either pulled the thread on one of the 4 mounting bolts or broken a bolt or mounting bracket.

I hope you can fix it and enjoy your trip.
